Celebrating the life of

Robert J. Probst

August 05, 1931 - July 20, 2024

Robert J. Probst

It is with great sadness that we bid farewell to a very special man Robert Probst.

Robert was born in Hempstead, New York, on August 5, 1931, to John and Katherine Probst and was the third eldest of 10 children.  He grew up on the Island of Wreck Lead, New York or what is now known as Island Park.

He graduated from Oceanside High School in 1950 and soon after enlisted in the US Air Force.  He served with the 343" Bomb Squadron during the Korean War, where he was a radio operator for his B-29 named "Haulin Ass" and was stationed at Yakota, AFB, Korea.

After the war Robert attended college on the GI bill & graduated from the University of Kansas in Lawrence.  In 1954 at the age of 23 he married Rosemary Thorne of Kansas. They had five children.

Robert had a successful career in advertising working for Thomas Publishing in New York,

Detroit, and New Jersey where he ultimately retired in 2006.  Robert was a talented artist who communicated best with a drawing and would invariably pull out a pen or pencil and make a sketch as he talked.  He was a master of pen and ink and oil painting.  His Landscape and portrait paintings regularly garnered awards at local art shows.  After his retirement he created an expansive series of pen and ink drawings, documented the historic Bay shacks of Long Island's South shore.

He had a kind sense of humor and loved to spend time with family and friends.  He loved to fish.  Robert was a shining example of love and kindness and his impact on our lives will be felt for generations to come.  He was devoted to his family.

Robert is survived by his beloved wife of 45 years, Virginia Probst; his five children, Bobby of Michigan, his daughter, Diane of Brentwood, California, son Stephen of San Francisco, California, daughter, Verene of Arlington, Virginia, son, Kenneth of San Rafael,  California, his step daughter, Rene Raffa of Gulfport, Florida; six grandchildren, Sarah Burkle, Alex Worrell, Ian and Kai Probst, Kimberly David, five great grandchildren, Revel, Desi, Maverick, Landon and Kayla. He is also survived by 3 younger brothers, Tommy, Gene and Peter and his younger sister Patti, and numerous nieces, nephews, and inlaws.

Donations can be made in Robert's Memory to St James Catholic Church, Savannah, GA.
